Google is essentially plagiarizing web content, putting it ahead of everyone else’s content and then reaping all the profits. It’s going to hurt a lot of content creators, especially ones that barely scrape by on ad revenues.
It won’t last though. Google needs its content creators or it will have nothing to sell ads against, as you say.
We are going to have to face the facts though. Generative AI is here to stay, and it’s a remarkable tool that will empower the previously powerless. It will also create disparity in power in other realms. It is very expensive to run and that gives all the power to the megacorporations to become its gatekeepers.
We need a system in place to track how content is digested into these models and a means of distributing compensation to those whose content is used for profit. Otherwise it’s just plain theft. I think web3 solutions like micropayments could be the answer to the problem.
